Self-portrait, medium format, digital, 2022. This idea of ‘identity’ came to me a few years back, while I was doing art performances mostly in front of the camera, with no audience except myself and the artist(s) collaborating with me. Back then, I wore a blue Honduran skirt, a sombrero, and a few accessories: sunglasses and a corn kernel necklace that I wore almost all the time. This idea began as a series of digital portraits, and later that same year I introduced it in live actions during an art residency in Guadalajara, México, with other local artists I invited to collaborate with me during a residency tour that the Canada Council for the Arts awarded me.
Now that I look back at this work, I can’t help but wonder what this same idea would look like with the new outfit I came up with in the first year of the fellowship at Cranbrook. I am also wondering what this portrait would look like in a different environment, in a living room, a bedroom, etc., using color film.
I am trying to warm up my creative juices before the second year starts in less than two weeks, still unsure how I will start, if it means picking up where I left off with the sculpture of the conch, meaning that I’ve been thinking about plastering it, or building a set in my new studio where I will be presenting all of my critiques, doing more public rituals, or creating more props, or even modifiying family heirlooms into sculptural pieces.
It all seems like it's coming together to me; I am really excited!
